Day 9: Is that Mine?: Matagorda, TX

What a beautiful day. It was a bonus beautiful day. Sunny, low 20s in temperature. The forecast had called for cloudy and some rain. Boom, none of that until much later in the day. Yay! Beach!

What about the walk? Oh yes, no rush to get up and moving as no moving is required today. Rather than walking the beach, I ventured up the Colorado river. Yes, the Colorado river. Not the cliched one in Colorado and Arizona, the Texas Colorado river. There were birds. The road alongside the river is straight and flat. Wasn’t a super long walk, was getting hungry.

Straight line road

Here is what we did today. Walked over to the beach. Amy was somewhat enthusiastic.

We came back to the van after I got too hot and Amy needed some water.

The van. It’s lonely.

We had lunch of naan and humus (no pitas at the grocery store so you wing it). After lunch Mrs Milddogs headed back to the beach while Amy and I poked around back at the van base doing a few minor tweaks. After some convincing, Amy joined me on the walk back to the beach. The beach is about 300 meters from where we are parked. This time we brought water! We had fun watching the Nuns set up their tents and chairs. They seemed to enjoy themselves. Good beach break, time to go back to the van!

Nun Truck

I had thought about flying the drone today but it’s pretty windy here on the coast. Not sure my tiny drone is up for that. Wouldn’t be good for little Becky to have her Junior Miss Texas hairdo messed up by my crashing drone.

Oh crap, I forgot, in Chattanooga our Cracker Barrel campground was right near Little Debbie street. Yes, the snacking cake Little Debbie. Almost made me think I should buy some and live with the regret. Fortunately, that thought was fleeting.

Short bio break, some shade time (shade did make me less red). Then we followed Mrs Milddogs back to the beach. We had a nice walk around and watched some kites fly around. Then, back to the van for dinner prep. Dinner? Yup. A nice curry that Mrs Milddogs made served on that beautiful off-gassing table I hastily fabricated before departure. Curry was great, table may be salvageable.

Pretty sure I discovered a land mine on the beach. It had clear land mine markings. “2.5 lbs” “health” and words like that to throw you off. It was partially buried. Fortunately I stepped on the side. I dug around it and left it marked for the clean up crew.

Mine?

Amy got some thorns in her paw on one of our walks. Second time doing that here. They are sharp little buggers!

We have been spending some time not planning our next moves. Tomorrow we are heading to Kerrville, TX. It’s a decent jump point to the next steps. They have a Sonic and some other things we might need, like bread and a hospital if Sonic doesn’t go well. It will be full hookup so you know what that means? We are DTS! <- Down To Shower (that probably wasn’t funny).

Beach life was nice. I wish people would pick up their trash. There are some nice people here. So far they have understood when I have yelled “Get the fuck away from me! 6 feet! 6 feet!” at them. OK, I have not had to do that. Maybe I thought about it.

In the morning we will spend some time on the beach before we head out. Whoa, that’s for tomorrow’s post.

That’s it from our parking lot for now. Shout out to Verizon for the JetPack working so well so far!
