Day 2: Fall 2023 Adventure: There’s no snow on the beach: Assateague Island State, Park, MD

Lovely walk this morning. Lackawanna was a bit muddy so I ended up turning around at a few points on some of the trails. Did not want to play fall down go boom in the mud. Lackawanna was nice. It was quiet after quiet time. It does need a lot of maintenance. Perhaps I shall call it Lackamaintenance State Park.

After walk and breakfast we packed up and hit the road. Not a huge number of km but a lot of local traffic in the last 200km. We stopped at a park in Radner, PA for lunch. Mrs Milddogs had a lobster roll with leftover lobster and I had a fine sandwich.

As we turned south(ish) in Delaware there was a lot of traffic heading north(ish) and many, many motorcycles. It was OC Bikefest in Ocean City, MD and it ended today. The dudes on the three wheel “bikes” had the advantage for the stop and go traffic as they headed home. I assume everyone was deaf by the end of the traffic jam due to all of the loud Harleys.

This is my first time in Delaware, hi Joe!. I’ve been to Delaware, ON. There is a race track in Delaware, ON that my second cousin Jim Fenwick used to race at. My great-uncle Ron Fenwick built the race car. I also used to think that George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers were from Delware, ON. I probably got that wrong.

After many extra time units spent at stop lights in the last 150 or so KM, we arrived at the State Park at 1520. At a few points it seemed like the time to destination on the GPS was not getting shorter. Mrs Milddogs noted that every time she looked at it it said the exact same time remaining.

We settled into our site in G loop and got ready to hit the beach. We walked around the beach for a bunch of time. No swimming as the ocean was fairly choppy. The water is warm so below the knees had a lovely little romp in the ocean. In grade 8, our valedictorian was my friend Matt Grant. During his clever speech, he complimented our geography teacher (Harvey Doell sp?) and stated that we all knew where the Atlantic and Pacific oceans were. Wait, I thought, which one is which? Matt did not know that not all of us had committed that fact to memory yet. I never told him for fear of letting him down.

Dinner time was lobster mac ‘n cheese for Mrs Milddogs and I ate some other leftovers. Post dinner we stayed outside for a bunch then it was time for the showers. Pretty darn good. I give them a solid 7 out of 10. Mrs Milddogs concurs.

As quiet time approached we walked back over to the beach (we just have to walk over the dunes so it is about 150 meters to the ocean) to have a look at the surf. There were plenty of little crabs along the dunes scurrying along to avoid our feet. We scurried to avoid them. Fortunately the scurries did not cancel each other out and there were no crab, human encounters. The lights of Ocean City were fairly bright and we could see the ferris wheel.

We have not seen any horses yet, just evidence of their presence. Maybe tomorrow? We have to move sites tomorrow so we may go explore the area a bit. No electricity at the next site so tonight we charge everything up. ABC: Always Be Charging <- this is not a reference to improper credit card use. When we move sites we may go exploring. Perhaps we should pick up some cake?

My feet are sandy.
