East Coast 2026: Day 10: Island Pie

Hello World! Good night’s sleep in the somewhat dreary little campground. More on that later. I walked down Cape Rd to the Parkway and shore. I did not have easy access to the actual shore but I did see the water.

We got ready fairly quickly and headed up to Cape Tryon Lighthouse. The last kilometer of driving was down a rather rough single lane dirt road. Fortunately we did not meet any oncoming traffic. The pay off was great. Spectacular views and a pretty lighthouse.

We stayed for a while hoping to see some seals. The AI said the seals often hang out below the lighthouse. We did not see any. The AI failed in this attempt to take over the world. We waited for one of the two other cars to leave then followed them down the road. My thinking being that 2 is greater than 1 and anyone coming the other way would have to back out. Nobody came the other way. No crisis. No crisis averted.

Eventually we decided we would head off island today. But first, a few stops. Some we shan’t mention. The last one was near the bridge and it was called “The Handpie Company”. I shall not attempt any humour with that name. Anyway, they sell hand pies. Which, surprising, are half held pies. Since it was lunch time we got a few each and one apple hand pie for dessert. Turns out hand pies are larger than they seemed. We have leftovers and are so far happy with our purchase. I forgot to take pictures of the actual pie. Oh, turns out my aunt’s cousin owns a farm right near the hand pie place.

Once we were all hepped up on meat pies we headed to the bridge. Yes, the bridge. We paid our $20 to leave PEI and drove across the bridge without incident and with much lower stress levels. Thanks, PEI, we had fun.

Once in New Brunswick we celebrated the thirty cent cheaper gas and filled up the tank. Sorry, PEI, unlike your lobster, the gas prices were too rich for us.

We decided to make a longer drive and head up north of Fredericton to Mactaquac Provincial Park. First we stopped for a short visit with my aunt and uncle. Unlike last year we did not beg food nor lodging this year. Glad they were available on short notice.

We arrived at Mactaquac just after 18:10 after a brief stop to fill up again with the sweet NB gasoline. We spotted 7 deer on our way to the park. We are pretty much alone in our section of the park.

A note about Tranquility Camping and Cabins. Note that I never ventured over to the washrooms. Maybe they are perfect. Our original campsite was pretty wet, as were others. Since the park was less than 50% full we move to a different site and called the owner to clear our move. Our new site was dryer if not a bit smaller. Overall it just seems like a bit of a sad little campground. The owners really nice and we wish him well, but we would have been better off elsewhere. Ultimately it didn’t matter as we were only there to sleep. Having electrify was nice to run the furnace and make some hot water.

For dinner tonight we cooked some pork skewers and heated some naan bread on our little BBQ/ grill. It was great.

Amy had 3 suppers. I take it she was hungry.

Thing I forgot from yesterday. When I was out riding my Brompton, a bald eagle flew over. I have it on 360 camera but have not processed that footage yet.

Good night from Mactaquac! Time for some cake.
