Dat 13: Lake Casa Blanca International State Park: Sleeping in Fajitas

Chilly morning (still not complaining) and no extended sleep in. Morning walk was basically the same route as yesterday. The tide was high (I’m going to be your number one) so there was not much beach.

After returning we slowly set about getting ready to depart. We left just before 1000 and headed for the dump station. There are two “ports” on the dump station and we were head to toe with another dude. He was coughing so I sprayed him with feces to keep him away. No, I did not do that, I just stayed away. He was the 173rd person to recommend Garner State Park (we are not going there). We remain 100% feces free on our dump station events.

Our drive today took us through some different parts of Texas on the way to Laredo, TX. We stopped in Alice, TX to get some lunch at Mi Familia Mexican Cafe. It was well rated. A tad scary (dirt, not violence) but the Tacos and Chalupas were really good. We pulled into the Veteran’s Park down the road and had lunch inside cause it was a bit rainy and cold.

Next stop down the road was Freer, TX. In case America is not free enough, we have Freer. Freer is known for several things including; first oil strike in Texas. The annual Rattlesnake roundup, apparently a very active deer hunting community which perhaps explains all of the hotels. Well, the oil industry might also explain all of the hotels.

We arrived at the campground at 1350. The office was closed but the sign said they would be back at 1330 so we waited in reverse. While we filled in the self checkin, Mrs Milddogs noticed they were now engaging with customers and she got us properly checked in. Always a good thing to do (ignore the foreshadowing).

Our site is decent. The park is not fully booked. It does have a reputation for a lack of attention from staff and park hosts, loud guests and people just taking your campsite (continue to ignore the foreshadowing). We hung out for a bit to take a break and then headed into Laredo for some errands. We just happened to stop near Krispy Kreme. You can’t buy just one.

A dozen, really?

After a few stops and some hours, we picked up dinner at La Casita Nueva. Fajitas for me and Rellenos for Mrs Milddogs. I shared cause mine was better. Better except for the part where I got fajita juice all over my bed. Might be something to deal with tomorrow.

As we re-entered the park, we saw a few little deer at the front gate. Maybe they escaped Freer, TX? Mrs Milddogs then declared that she was certain someone would be in our spot (ok, that’s enough foreshadowing). Sure enough, there was a Class C in our spot. They had levelled and plugged in the power. Being the kind soul I am, I offered to let them find another site. They did not have a front license plate and I instinctively spoke French to them. I confirmed on their third pass around the loop that they were indeed from Quebec. Maybe we will become friends after my opening act of kindness. BTW, me speaking french is the functional equivalent of a 2 year old. They did get a site because about 50% or more are empty and they did not do a fourth loop around.

That’s OUR site!

The geography of this area is different than the other places we have been. It’s more like New Mexico. Which might make sense given we are a few miles from old Mexico.

This park seems pretty cool. Plenty to explore. We may do that tomorrow when we are free of rain. Maybe we will go explore Laredo some more? We are not crossing to Mexico.

As I walked out on the streets of Laredo
As I walked out on Laredo one day,
I spied a poor cowboy, all wrapped in white linen
All wrapped in white linen and cold as the clay.
