Day 30: Sarnia, ON: I’m gonna show you a new dance

It rained last night. Not as much as they forecast, but enough to wake us up a bit. You know what I forgot? There are train tracks right near Mounds State Park. I remembered the small airport, but not the train tracks. Didn’t really keep us up much. Still a good place.

Morning walk was modified to avoid some of the trails. The rain made them wet and muddy and I didn’t want a fall down go boom nor a bunch of muddy clothes. So I stuck with the campground roads and the gravel trails along the White River.

White River

Post walk we disconnected the power and hit the road. We stopped for gas and then got on the highway. The forecast, which was for a fair amount of wind and rain turned out to be not as bad as expected. We had wind but mostly a tail wind. Pretty much best fuel economy of the trip.

We stopped in Toledo, OH for our last Sonic visit of the trip. I’ll take some Chilli Cheese Fries and a gallon of Coke! Thanks for the suggestion Mrs Milddogs!

Toledo was much like Detroit and Indianapolis. All highway construction everywhere. We had some minor delays but the duelling GPSs picked acceptable routes. At one slow down the work truck pulling a trailer containing a spool of pipe wasn’t as attentive as they should have been and just about rear ended us. He ended up slightly scissored in our lane and the next while we had fortunately started to move again. A few too many semi close calls this trip. I’m the common denominator so shall think about that.

In Michigan, north of Detroit proper, we passed a field full of deer. We kept looking but did not spot Ted Nugent. Perhaps he was off doing the Wango Tango. About 2 km down the road there was a Cabelas, we should have gone in to alert the staff and shoppers that dinner was just down the road. This was up near 21 Mile road. Far from 8 Mile. As Mrs Milddogs pointed out, nobody is going to write a song about 21 Mile.

One more stop in Port Huron for “cheap” gas, although not nearly as cheap as it is in the more southern states, and we headed for the Bluewater Bridge connecting Port Huron, MI to Sarnia, ON. Slight delay at the border crossing due to volume but the actual Canada Customs & Immigration part was quick and painless.

Oh, one forgotten story from West St Louis KOA and amateur campfire night. Along the highway through Missouri there are 46 signs telling you about discount Lodge cast iron cookware. The dudes at site A15 must have stopped as we happened to witness them frantically getting the dutch oven (the cookware, not the other thing) out of the fire as they had left the styrofoam packaging on the feet of the thing. Oops. Did I mention amateur campfire night? OK, technically every night is amateur campfire night.

And that was about it. In Sarnia we will visit family. Might post again Sunday after the drive home with a detour in Toronto, dangerously close to a Krispy Kreme.

Oh, the shower! Here at Camp Mom, the shower rates a 10. First time in 4 weeks I did not wear sandals while having my shower. I feel so pretty.

I will have to winterize the van tomorrow, as the temperature is dropping down too cold for too long at night. Boo.
