NS 2025: Day 6: Truro, NS: No more fish and chips!

Morning walk took me along a different sequence of the campground roads. I was trying to minimize some of the downhill as my big knee has been bit sore (big knee as MRI says I have arthritis, 2 tears in the medial meniscus and one in the lateral meniscus and sometimes it hurts). Anyway, I figured I would do about 20 loops around one section with limited elevation changes, but there were some campers on the loop and I doubted they would be interested in me passing by every 2 minutes. I ended up exploring some other parts of the campground before returning to basecamp.

It was a foggy morning in the valley. The night had been very pleasant and we slept with windows open most of the night.

We hit the road around 10:00 with the ultimate goal of making it to Truro, NS. Normally that is about a 2.5 hour drive and we managed to do it in 7 hours! How, you ask? Keep reading!

First stop was back at Fairn’s Orchard to pick up some more healthier food. Good to see our old friends again!

Next stop was CJ Nob’s Farm Market as they have baked goods. We enjoyed our few minutes there selecting some super secret treats! Oh wait, I forgot to mention. Everything we got from the German Bakery in Annapolis Royal was incredibly good. It is also all gone, hence the need to stop at Nob’s. Post Nob we drove next door and got some gasoline to fuel our travels.

We chose to stay mostly off of the main roads today. This strategy is wonderfully full of scenery and opportunities. As it was approaching lunchtime somewhere (Newfoundland?) we decided to stop at the Ebb Tide Cafe in Lawrencetown, NS for some lunch. While waiting for the food to be prepared Mrs Milddogs ventured into the local thrift shop called “(We found this) in your back pocket” thrift shop. Amy and I stayed outside. From inside the store the manager was making eye contact and clearly checking me out. Always flattering! He came outside and asked if I was waiting for my wife, and I replied in the affirmative. Then he asked about Amy and we chatted about her. It took him some moments to work up the courage, but eventually he said that I look like Colin Mochrie and wondered if I was him. I get this fairly frequently. I confirmed I was not anyone but me, but that I get this and George Clooney often. For some reason my new friend stated he did not see the George Clooney resemblance but did see Colin Mocherie. Colin, if you are reading this, and why wouldn’t you, we should hang out someday. Oh, back to lunch, we got fish and chips, clams and scallops. We drove up the road a few minutes and had lunch in the Rotary Park. We were able to eat at least 50% of our haul and then did the short walk down to the river to have a look.

We were now about 50km down the road and only 2 hours into our journey. Let’s make some distance! NO. Let’s get pie. We stopped at Apple Valley Pies Plus Outlet in Berwick, NS where they feature “seconds” from the pie factory. Odd, given seconds are mandatory when having pie! There were about 15 people in the store and we were the youngest ones. We were also the rookies so some of the veterans gave us tips. Thanks, fellow cheap pie shoppers!

We passed a Guy’s Frenchys (yes, the correct spelling) as we approached pie store so we circled back so Mrs Milddogs could get her thrift on. Amy and I stayed outside and wandered around for a bit until we all reunited and hit the road.

Next stop was Dollarama to pick up some things we forgot or otherwise needed. Hey, are you counting the stops? I’m not, Amy and I have lost track. GPS says only two more hours until Truro.

We opted to take the secondary roads for most of the rest of the route. It was interesting. The roads were in pretty good shape but were twisty and hilly. Eventually we inevitably met up with the highway and followed it into Truro.

Once settled (we are mooch docking again) I got my Brompton ready and took it on a short (6km) jaunt around the neighbourhood. It was nice to get the legs moving again!

We are unsure if there is travel happening tomorrow. In the next few days we will head over to the Northumberland Strait side of Nova Scotia. Whatever we do, it will probably not include procuring fish and chips. Oh, who am I fooling?
